Today, let’s raise awareness and shed light on a critical issue that often remains hidden in the shadows. Elder abuse effects our most vulnerable and it’s time to raise awareness and take action against such abuse.
Elder abuse takes various forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse. Today, let’s focus on the crucial aspect of financial abuse, which can have devastating consequences for our elderly loved ones.

Although identifying elder financial abuse may be challenging, it is crucial to discuss and take proactive measures to prevent it. While the forms of abuse can vary, there are four fundamental characteristics that are present in all instances of financial abuse:
- The exploitation of imbalanced power dynamics, such as exploiting someone’s poor health, limited mobility, or lack of technological skills for personal financial gain.
- The betrayal of trust by establishing a seemingly genuine relationship that is, in reality, driven by self-interest.
- Causing significant emotional harm and psychological distress to the victim.
- Unethically leveraging a power of attorney or other legal mechanisms to gain control over someone’s finances.
How can we try to combat this issue?
We need to address its root causes and promote education, awareness, and preventive measures. Here are a few steps we can take:
- Education: By raising awareness about the signs and consequences of elder financial abuse, we empower individuals to recognise the red flags and take appropriate action. Let’s spread knowledge about this issue far and wide!
- Communication: Open dialogue is crucial. Encourage conversations within families, communities, and organisations about elder abuse prevention.
- Empowerment: Equipping older adults with knowledge and resources is vital. Let’s provide them with financial literacy programs, teach them about their rights, and assist them in setting up safeguards to protect their assets and well-being.
- Reporting: If you suspect elder financial abuse, don’t hesitate to report it to the appropriate authorities. By reporting, we can help victims receive the support they need and hold people accountable for their actions.
Together, we can create a society where our elders are safe, respected, and empowered. On this Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let’s pledge to stand against elder financial abuse and work towards a brighter, more compassionate future.
